Overall I found the show quite boring, a 4/10 at best.ĪWA Superclash was a historic show, but not for its quality. When you guys review the WWE/AWA DVD eventually, I can then forgive those who chose the Superclash over the Spectacular Legacy of the AWA DVD. Nick Bockwinkel being regulated to a 6-man when the WWE DVD had far more of Bockwinkel really soured the clash in my book. I’m sorry John and Wai, but the wrong production won the twitter poll. After finishing the show, I discovered I was totally right for wanting the WWE/AWA DVD to win. When it lost, I accepted the result and watched the Superclash. To be honest, I was really hoping the WWE DVD on the AWA would be reviewed. I give Superclash '85: 8 Laser Dicks out of 10. My rating is based on mostly nostalgia than match quality. I would had loved for him to be in Magnum's place vs. Sad to see the great Nick Bockwinkel hidden in a 6 man tag. Hennig matches later on that would had preceded their WWF feud. Verne should had done everything in his power to bring Kerry up in 1985 and transition the AWA title to him with Hanson just being a temporary placeholder between Martel and Von Erich. This was Kerry's first time wrestling in the Windy City. We also found out that due to World Class's superb television syndication that Kerry Von Erich had a good following in the midwest. Hayes was right.this feud still had enough heat and fuel for another year. The story goes that it was backstage at this event that Hayes and Gordy also broke the news that they were out as well, thus the screwjob finish here and a few weeks later when Garvin and Regal won the belts. It was obvious watching the tag title match again that the Freebirds were booked to win the title once Verne got notice from the Road Warriors that they were leaving. Or maybe Mike Von Erich if he was healthy during this period. I would rather see Mil bring a luchador up from Mexico with him to challenge for Mr. ![]() ![]() Greg Gagne I'm sure lied about his weight so he could be 3 pounds over the 215 limit and be considered a "heavyweight" contender instead, although he would had been the perfect placeholder for that division. I still have no idea why they were so light on contenders for this title. Was Brad Rheingans a true light heavyweight contender? He still looked atleast 225 or 230 here. The fact that the AWA wouldnt be able to pull more than 10K in this city after this event while BOTH the WWF and NWA pulled huge crowds in Chicago 1986 and beyond mirrors where pro wrestling was heading deep in the 80s. As a AWA fan I am very proud of this moment in their history as it showed they were still able to pull some good sized crowds being almost 2 years deep into the WWE expansion era even with the help of the Pro Wrestling USA joint banner.Ĭhicago is the barometer of wrestling popularity.
